Summary Salarino and Salanio, in Italy, discuss Bassanio's ship that has sailed with Gratiano. They discuss Shylock's anger at Jessica's running away with Christian Lorenzo and taking Shylock's money. Salarino has heard tell of a ship that washed up in France, laden with money and goods, and hope that it is not one of Antonio's. They discuss Antonio's kindheartedness: he has entreated Bassanio to take his time to court Portia in Belmont, and not to rush home because of the bond. They remark on the magnitude of Antonio's love for Bassanio and seek him to cheer him. It is the wrong casket, as a note inside informs him, and he departs. Summary Gratiano and Salarino are at the masked event. They are waiting for Lorenzo. He arrives, late. Jessica too arrives, in boys' clothes. They profess their love for one another. She is embarrassed by her attire and he reassures her. She goes to get more money and returns. Antonio enters and announces that the masque party is cancelled because there is good wind for sailing and they must depart for Belmont immediately. Summary Shylock says how he hates to be going to supper at Bassanio's. He warns Jessica to lock herself in the house so she doesn't see the masked people in the streets. Jessica says, in an aside, that if all goes as planned, she will have lost her father. Summary Gratiano, Lorenzo, Salarino and Solanoi discuss their entrance to a masked ball. Lancelot enters with Lorenzo's letter. Lorenzo asks Lancelot to send his regards to Jessica, privately. Lancelot goes to invite Shylock to sup with Bassanio. Lorenzo tells Gratiano of his plan to be with Jessica. He thinks she is fair and rich. Summary Jessica and Lancelot are in a room in Shylock's house. Jessica, Shylock's daughter, bids Lancelot goodbye. She gives Lancelot a letter to give to Lorenzo, whom she hopes to marry after she converts to Christianity. Summary Lancelot debates with himself whether to leave his master Shylock or not. He decides to run. Lancelot's father, Gobbo, enters and doesn't recognize Lancelot. Gobbo seeks Lancelot, and Lancelot lies to him and tells him he's died. Lancelot mocks him further but eventually reveals his identity.   Lancelot reveals his desire to run away and serve Bassanio instead. Lancelot urges his father to give a gift he has brought to Shylock to Bassanio to gain his favor. They fall over one another trying to ask Bassanio to serve him. Bassanio accepts, and says it is Shylock's desire as well.   Bassanio orders to dress him better than his other servants. Lancelot and Gobbo exit. Gratiano enters and demands to accompany Bassanio to Belmont. Bassanio agrees but warns Gratiano not to behave wildly as is his habit and risk the loss of Portia. He promises to behave well.
